Brother Rabbit is a Syracuse, NY based rock band, playing a wide spectrum of music.  We play songs from the likes of Tom Petty, Blink 182, Chili Peppers, and many original works as well.

Here's how we came by the name.

~Paul Fink and Chris Halen were looking for a bass player for gigs they'd booked with another band that had dissolved.  Scotty Matthews, an associate of Chris', heard the story and volunteered to pick up, among other things, the bass guitar.  Elizabeth Gonzalez came on board as vocalist at the same time.  Brother Rabbit played their first gig after only a few hours of rehearsals, in the middle of a blizzard, to a massive crowd of about 20 people.  During those first rehearsals, everyone brought suggestions for band names, however no one could agree on anyone else's ideas.  This produced no result and thus the band remained nameless until very near the actual gig.

Scotty and Chris had seen a movie entitled "The Commitments" which chronicles a Dublin youth (Jimmy Rabbite) as he assembles "the world's hardest-working band."  They are joined by Joey "The Lips" Fagin, who earned his nickname for his trumpet playing. Fagin, clearly a devout something or other, addresses Jimmy as "Brother Rabbit." As this part of the movie unfolds, I see a light go on over Chris's head.  Amidst the distractions of three kids and two dogs, Chris, who had been writing down quotes all day to see if they would work as band names, says, "Brother Rabbit" aloud.  I say in return, "I'm already there.  Yeah, let's see if Paul and Elizabeth like it."  Paul and Elizabeth both gave it the green light, and Brother Rabbit was born!

The rebirth of Brother Rabbit.

~As the story continues, some members have since left and new members have joined.  After our last performance at The Party Barge on April 13, 2001, drummer of BR, Chris Halen departed to further his career and to begin new musical projects in Buffalo, NY.  Soon after, Spoon was asked to fill the position.

As the months of organization and practice wore on, it became clear that we were changing our musical format, and at that time guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Scotty Matthews decided to step out of the band in order to pursue different musical interests.  BR would like to wish both Chris and Scotty the best of luck in their endeavors.

Though the road has been rough and strewn with many bassists, we are looking forward to getting back out to the clubs and doing what we love!
